Plans for WordPress 5.0 (Bebo): the Gutenberg Editor Rollout

Last Updated -

As a managed web hosting company Pagely pretty much handle updates the same way every time. Plugins and Security patches are applied ASAP, and this goes for security patches to WordPress core versions as well. Yet with major releases, we have a separate workflow we can basically break down into three phases...

Phase 1: A Soft Release of Bebo - WordPress 5.0 (December 6th, 2018)

New Applications will run on the latest version during this Phase, customers can 'opt-in' to receive the upgrade on older applications.

With Major releases such as WordPress 5 we begin with soft rollout, followed by testing and potentially waiting for follow up patches to be released as well. Bebo (WordPress 5.0) is no different. By the end of the December 6th, 2018 it will be the default version for new applications.

Phase 2: Patching and Testing (December 7th, 2018 - January 2019)

We receive feedback from our teams and update documentation as required for the latest version. Security patches are applied.

During this phase we monitor traffic on the latest update, applying security patches (which are mentioned and discussed here), monitoring new applications, and getting feedback from customers who opted in earlier. This phase will last until after the holidays. Once we are confident everything is stable, we move on to the final phase...

Phase 3: Mass Release (To be determined in January 2019)

Final phase where we rollout and update applications to the latest WordPress version. Please subscribe to our status Page for updates.

Pagely will notify customers when we are ready for a hard release of Bebo early next year. This is an active process where we monitor customers writing in about specific issues, and troubleshooting on a case by case basis that's in line with our white glove approach. Currently with the level of open issues we are seeing, we expect this will be around WordPress 5.0.1-5.0.3.

In Conclusion...

Pagely will continue to provide you with the latest and greatest. At the same time, there's no need to stress our customers during the holidays unless they wish to opt in right away. Certain patches (such as those related to security) will be applied without notice, but rest assured we will not do a hard release of WordPress 5.0 (Gutenberg) until next year, and we won't do it without a notice in advance.

In the mean time, we suggest you enjoy the holidays and prepare for Gutenberg if you haven't already.
